Executive Summary

The goal of this event is to discuss some of the various sources of capital available to emerging pharma and biotech companies and the current trends affecting the market. We have established a panel of investors ranging from angels to investment bankers who will explain their role in financing companies in the healthcare sector. The panel discussion will touch on current technologies attracting investment, promising new sectors, selection mechanisms for targeting companies for investment, factors contributing to successful exits, and upcoming challenges facing the industry in the future.

Speaker's Bios


Moderator

Stephen Davis, JD, a partner in Goodwin Procter's Business Law Department, is a member of the Technology Companies Group and the Life Sciences, Securities & Finance, and Clean Technologies Practices. He has extensive experience in several areas of corporate practice with a focus on venture capital, corporate finance and securities, mergers and acquisitions, private equity and corporate counseling. Prior to joining Goodwin Procter, Mr. Davis was a shareholder in the New York office of Heller Ehrman, where he was co-chair of its corporate/venture law practice and chair of its New York business law practice.


Guest Speakers

Milena Adamian, MD, PhD, is Director of the Life Sciences Angel Network (LSAN) at the New York Academy of Sciences. Targeting early stage opportunities in life sciences, LSAN provides early stage companies with financial and operational support, sector-specific mentorship, and access to a broad network of investors for subsequent institutional financing. Dr. Adamian brings a unique perspective of a clinician and academic researcher with genuine passion for breakthrough technologies enriched by industry knowledge, Wall Street, and venture capital experience. Prior to leading LSAN, Dr. Adamian ran the San Francisco office for NYC-based venture firm Easton Capital Partners. Dr. Adamian is a cardiologist who went through extensive training at the world's best centers for Interventional Cardiology, including Centro Cuore Columbus in Milan, Italy with Dr. Antonio Colombo, and Lenox Hill Hospital/Cardiovascular Research Foundation in New York City. Dr. Adamian is an author of a number of peer-reviewed publications, and has served as a faculty member at major professional society meetings. Augmenting her medical accomplishments, Dr. Adamian was an Associate Medical Director at Boston Scientific Corporation, where she was responsible for design, management and analyses of the TAXUS (DES) clinical program and a key member of an award-winning Equity Research team at Lehman Brothers. Dr. Adamian continues her involvement at Easton Capital as Venture Partner. In addition, she serves a member of the Device Screening Committee for Life Science Angels and HealthTech Capital (both in Palo Alto, CA).


Noah Kroloff, MBA, is a Partner at NGN Capital, a healthcare venture capital firm with $430 million under management and offices in New York and Heidelberg. Prior to joining NGN Capital, Mr. Kroloff, who has over 20 years experience in healthcare, served as an executive officer at i-STAT Corporation, a publicly-traded medical device company where he was Vice President for International Sales & Marketing and Corporate Development. He was actively involved in the sale of i-STAT to Abbott Laboratories for approximately $450 million. He also led the creation of a global alliance with Abbott, a $61 million alliance with Hewlett-Packard Medical Products Group and created i-STAT's international distribution network. Prior to i-STAT, Mr. Kroloff was an Engagement Manager at McKinsey & Co. where he advised leading pharmaceutical and diagnostic companies on R&D management, portfolio strategy, and alliance formation. Mr. Kroloff received his BA in general science from Brandeis University and his MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management where he was a co-founder of and serves as a judge in the MIT $100K Entrepreneurship Competition. Mr. Kroloff is a member of the board of BeneChill, Coagulation Sciences, and iReminder, a board observer at Valtech Cardio and Cerapedics and is actively involved with OptiScan BioMedical and SpineView. He is a member of the board of the American Technion Society-NY Metro and was a member of McKinsey's alumni advisory council for 6 years.


Jennifer Friel Goldstein, MBA, is a Director on Pfizer's Venture Investments team. She is responsible for new investments as well as managing Pfizer's legacy $250M private equity portfolio. Jennifer brings ten years of business development, portfolio management, and consulting experience as well as a biotechnology background to the team. Jennifer joined Pfizer as part of the Portfolio and Decision Analysis group, where she led commercial and business development projects. While a consultant at Bain & Company, Jennifer focused on private equity deals. She has also had diverse internship experience at companies such as Chiron, Genelabs, and Genencor. Jennifer is a board observer to Ablexis and board member of the New York Venture Capital Association. She graduated magna cum laude with a BSE in Bioengineering and a Master's of Biotechnology from the University of Pennsylvania. Jennifer was also named a Joseph Wharton Fellow while completing her MBA at the Wharton school.


Khaled Habaye is a Vice President in the Equity Capital Markets Group at J.P. Morgan where he focuses on clients in the healthcare sector. Khaled has executed numerous IPOs, follow-on offerings and structured equity financings for clients across the healthcare subsectors, including the life-sciences and healthcare services. Khaled joined J.P. Morgan in 2003 as an Analyst in the Financial Institutions Coverage Group and joined Equity Capital Markets in 2005. Khaled graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree, cum laude, in Economics and Anthropology from Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota.


Daniel Wagner, MHS, MBA, joined Connecticut Innovations in 2007 and is responsible for sourcing and analyzing investment opportunities, leading CI investments in entrepreneurial high-tech ventures and advising and monitoring portfolio companies. He has been involved in a number of CI's investments and serves as a board observer for Axerion, CiDRA Corporation, CyVek, Engage121, EpiEP, Helix Therapeutics, LiQuifix, Metagenomix, Rib-X Pharmaceuticals, ShopText, and Soft Tissue Regeneration. Dan serves on the board of FMP Products. Dan also helps to administer Connecticut's $100 million Stem Cell Research Fund in partnership with the Connecticut Department of Public Health.

About the Organizers: The FOBIP Alumni Network is an established, non-profit, all volunteer, industry focused biotech club. It is exclusively composed of young professionals and graduate students from the biomedical sciences who have completed the Fundamentals of the Bioscience Industry Program (FOBIP). The program is taught by industry executives focusing on intellectual property, entrepreneurship, FDA regulations, finance and venture capital in the healthcare sector. The goal of our Alumni Network is to provide educational seminars, industry outreach, and networking opportunities for our members, guests, and followers.
